This information has been developed from the publications:
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Western Region of Melbourne (1986) by Neville Rosengren
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance on the Coast of Port Phillip Bay (1988) by Neville Rosengren.
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Shire of Otway (1984) by Neville Rosengren.
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage (external site) section of the Geological Society of Australia website for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Location:18-348109. One kilometre north of Skenes Creek near the junction of Irvine Creek.

Access:

Private road from Great Ocean Road at Skenes Creek.

Ownership:

Private land.

Geology:

Steeply dipping shales along the Skenes Creek Monocline are exposed in a small cut at the base of a spur and contain think lenticular black coal seams. The maximum width of seam exposed is one metre and a small amount has been extracted for domestic use.

Significance:Regional. Thin and discontinuous black coal seams are exposed in road cuttings and coastal outcrops in several localities throughout the Otways. Despite extensive search during the late 1800s, no seam of economic extent has been located in the Otway Shire. This site has one of the most extensive exposures as evidenced by these old workings.
