Soils of the Vineyards of the Great Western District

This report was prepared by Nabil Badawy of the former Department of Agriculture in 1982. A soil survey was conducted aiming to describe and map the distribution of the various soil types used for growing grapevines in the former Shires of Stawell and Ararat. The report summarises soil data and other relevant information for the vineyards surveyed in the Great Western area.

It was envisaged that the data included in this report would be used as the basis for initiating future soil-water-plant studies in order to maximise grape production in western Victoria.

Note that soils in this report are described in terms of the earlier Northcote Factual Key classification. Today, the Australian Soil Classification is the standard for classifying Australian soils.
