Geology

Early Pleistocene sediments (Qp1 – see Geology and Geomorphology).

Landform

Weakly dissected high level terraces and alluvial fans. This unit represents the earliest Pleistocene terrace. Only remnants of these terraces survive, as they have been eroded away over the past 1.5 million years or so. These remnants may be found in the upper reaches of the Mitchell River and Perry River valleys.

Soils

Only a limited number of profiles have been examined and no samples have been taken for physical and chemical analysis. A typical profile is described below.
Map: Nindoo Map Unit

Surface Soil

0-10 cm Very dark greyish brown (10YR3/2) loamy sand; gradual change to:
10-25cmLight grey (10YR7/2) loamy sand with quartz gravel; sharp change to:

Subsoil

25-60+ cmYellowish brown (10YR5/6) finely mottled with light brownish grey (10YR6/2) medium heavy clay.

Chemical and Physical Analysis

The surface soils are shallow sands to loamy sands, strongly to moderately acidic and moderately high in organic matter. The surface soils are low in clay. If these soils are also low in organic matter they will have poor water retention. Phosphorus levels are likely to be low or marginal and potassium levels are generally low in non-fertilised sites.

Land Use

Generally grazing.
