State of the Art on Irrigation Farms


Significant change is occurring in the Goulburn Murray Irrigation District (GMID). Irrigators are faced with irrigation system modernisation, Commonwealth Government water buy back and on-farm infrastructure programs, changed farming systems, new irrigation technologies, increased sophistication in water markets, extended dry periods and floods.

Welcome to the first edition in a series of newsletters, using real-world examples to show how irrigators in the Goulburn Murray Irrigation District are tackling issues such as system modernisation, new on-farm irrigation technologies, and changing farming systems.

Background
The Goulburn Murray Irrigation District (GMID) generates 24% of the total value of Victorian agricultural production. Significant change is occurring. Irrigators are faced with irrigation system modernisation, the Federal Government’s Water Buyback Scheme and on-farm infrastructure programs, evolving farming systems, new irrigation technologies, increased sophistication in water markets, extended dry periods and more recently, floods. These challenges have forced irrigators to try new and innovative strategies to remain profitable. We hope to assist other irrigators in the region, by sharing some of these insights.

We aim to enable irrigators to:

  • learn from other farmers who have successfully implemented on-farm innovation across the GMID
  • make informed decisions, fast track their adaptation to new conditions, minimise risks and maximise benefits

How we aim to do it

A regional Reference Group made up of farmers from across the GMID have identified irrigators who are implementing innovative approaches in response to changing conditions. Farm Services Victoria will interview those irrigators and develop case studies on these innovations. Future Farming Systems Research will consider and document the underlying science as to why particular innovations are successful.
