4.2.3.3 What is the trade-off between capital and operational cost?

Return to Main Menu | Return to Step 4 | Return to Step 4.2.3 | Next Step

Operating costs are directly related to the pressure the pump is operating against (the total dynamic head).

The selection of pipe sizes for the span-pipe and mainlines involves a compromise between the capital cost and the operating pressure, the latter of which determines the ongoing operating costs. Pivot purchasers need to be aware of this, and be involved in deciding what they are prepared to pay up-front in capital cost and the ongoing operating costs.

See the DPI Agnote “Centre pivots - The Capital and Operating Cost Trade-off”.
