Riparian and In-stream Biodiversity

Introduction | Research | Publications

The Productive Grazing, Healthy Rivers project, conducted within the former Department of Natural Resources and Environment between 2002-2006, aimed to improve riparian and in stream biodiversity in high rainfall, intensive grazing systems through better management practices for riparian zones and remnant vegetation. The objective was to provide landholders with the information and management tools required to integrate riparian and farm management for combined environmental and production outcomes.Photo: Night Heron

Project activities were based in the high rainfall bioregions of southern Victoria and focused on the intensive grazing (beef, dairy, prime lamb) industries. An extensive review of the relevant literature, current riparian management guidelines and practices and biodiversity databases occurred during the initial scoping year of the project. This, in combination with stake holder consultation in Gippsland and South-West Victoria lead to the development of the project research modules and extension activities.
