Location:578058 (8422). Eight kilometres south of Bairnsdale.

Abstract:

Haunted Hill Gravel.

Access:

Bairnsdale - Paynesville Road.

Ownership:

Crown land

Geomorphology::

A road cutting just north of Tyers Creek exposes a clear section of approximately 10 metres of Haunted Hill Gravel. The beds include a wide range of materials from silty clays and sands to prominent boulder beds. The lithology of the boulders is varied and includes sandstones, granitic rocks and porphyries, probably Snowy River Volcanics. A broad shallow synclinal form seen in the cutting may be a result of minor deformation of these beds.

Significance:

Regional. This is one of the best and most easily accessible outcrops of the Hanuted Hill Gravel in the Gippsland Lakes area.

Management:

Deterioration of the outcrop by slumping and gullying is occurring and the value of the site would be enhanced by occasional grading of the cutting surface.
