8723-4 Combienbar Devonian Sediments

This information has been developed from the publications:

    • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in Central Gippsland (1981) by Neville Rosengren, M.S McRae-Williams and S.M Kraemers.
    • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Gippsland Lakes Catchment (1984) by Neville Rosengren.
    • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in East Gippsland, Victoria (1981) by Neville Rosengren, M.S McRae-Williams
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage section of the Geological Society of Australia website for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Location:

778555 (also Bendock 764586) near Combienbar.

Abstract:

Fossils sites in Devonian sediments, (denoted, F)

Access:

Combienbar Road.

Ownership:

Crown Land.

Geology:

Green to brown medium-grained micaceous sandstones interbedded with red sandstones and siltstones are poorly exposed at these sites. Fragmented plant fossils including stem casts and occasional small indeterminant fish plates have been collected from these beds.

Significance:

Regional. Fossils sites in the Devonian Combienbar succession are rare.

Management:

The poorly preserved nature of specimens collected from surfacial deposits at these sites has been of limited value in determining stratigraphic relationships. Excavations at these sites may uncover better-preserved fossils and would enhance the significance of the site.
