Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Location:

Image: East Gippsland Sites of Significance
Butchers Ridge. Post-pile of jointed basalt (Older Volcanics).

Abstract:

Exposures of Tertiary Older Volcanics.

Access:

Buchan - Gelantipy Road.

Ownership:

Crown land (Road reserve).

Geology:

Lower Tertiary basalt (Older Volcanics) is well exposed in road cuttings on the Buchan - Gelantipy Road. In these cuttings is a contact between a partially weathered polygonally jointed basalt flow and another flow displaying well developed spheroidal weathering features. Of additional interest is the exposure of flat lying basalt columns or post piles.

Significance:

Regional. Best exposure of the structures in Older Basalt in the region. The post pile formation is rate in basalts in Victoria.

Management:

The value of this site would be enhanced by the maintenance of clear faces in the cutting.
