Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. Location:

775915. 5 kilometres east of Bindi.

Abstract:

Unconformable contact between Buchan Caves Limestone and Snowy River Volcanics and a faulted contact between the latter and Lower Silurian biotite schists.

Access:

Saw Pit Creek Track.

Ownership:

Crown land.

Geology/Geomorphology:

The contact between the Snowy River Volcanics and the Buchan Cave Limestone is poorly exposed although detailed mapping has shown the contact to be unconformable. The track follows a prominent east-west strike ridge in the volcanics and steeply descends 50 m to a saddle which corresponds to the crush zone associated with the Bindi Fault. At this locality Snowy River Volcanics are faulted against Lower Silurian biotite schists.

Significance:

Local. The physiographic expression of the fault together with the structural control of ridge form is well displayed in this area.

Management:

Because of the area covered by the site the value of the geological/geomorphological features is unlikely to be seriously reduced by localized disturbance, e.g. road works or extractive industries.
