Victoria River valley upstream from gorge.

Abstract:

Contrasting valley profiles cut in Omeo Metamorphic complex.

Access:

Victoria Falls Road.

Ownership:

Partially private land, partially Crown land.

Geology/Geomorphology:

The Victoria River has cut a deep gorge in gneiss and well foliated schists of the Omeo Metamorphic Complex. The gorge heads in several waterfalls which are separated by cascades and rapids and this valley form is in marked contrast to the gently sloping alluvial valley upstream from the gorge.

Significance:

Local. The accessibility of the site together with the contrasting river valley forms displayed make this a valuable site for studying fluvial processes.

Management:

The significance of the site would be degraded by large scale dam construction within or below the gorge.
