Landslide Risk Management

The Australian Geomechanics Society (external link) have published a set of Concepts and Guidelines for Landslide Risk Management in Australia. The guidelines have been adopted by the Colac Otway Shire for landslide risk management in the region in an effort to limit the Shire’s liability. The AGS guidelines are based on the assessment of risk, which is defined as the product of the likelihood of a landslide event and the consequence of that event. For any development in an area of the Shire mapped as susceptible to landslides, an assessment of the risk of damage to property and the risk of loss of life is now required.

Landslide risk can be assessed using the Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS) guidelines on landslide risk management. A paper presented in the Australian Geomechanics Journal by Dahlhaus and Miner (2002) discusses implementing the AGS landslide risk management guidelines in a Municipal Planning Scheme - as a case study in the Colac Otway Shire.
